{"id":9094,"date":"2013-12-08T16:55:56","date_gmt":"2013-12-09T00:55:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/?p=9094"},"modified":"2013-12-08T17:01:38","modified_gmt":"2013-12-09T01:01:38","slug":"sf-playhouse-welcomes-holiday-season-with-storefront-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/sf-playhouse-welcomes-holiday-season-with-storefront-church\/","title":{"rendered":"SF Playhouse Welcomes Holiday Season with Storefront Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_7896-150x150.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9095\" src=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_7896-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Borough President (Gabriel Marin) begins to &#8220;feel alive&#8221; in<em> Storefront Church<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0[rating:5] (5\/5 stars)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">San Francisco Playhouse presents <em>Storefront Church, <\/em>the third play in John Patrick Shanley\u2019s \u201cChurch and State\u201d trilogy.\u00a0 This play stands up to the two previous plays&#8211;the Pulitzer Prize winning <em>Doubt <\/em>(2004) and <em>Defiance <\/em>(2006).\u00a0 Here the playwright grapples with conflict between greed and redemption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Brilliantly directed by Joy Carlin and featuring an accomplished cast, <em>Storefront Church <\/em>is a beautifully constructed play.\u00a0 Thrown together by a mortgage crisis, a basically decent, ethically conflicted Bronx borough President (Gabriel Marin) and a high minded preacher who\u2019s a Katrina refugee from New Orleans (Carl Lumbly) square off in an intense confrontation about their individual commitments to their social and spiritual beliefs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Gabriel Marin is scrappy and cynical as an up and coming politician Donaldo whose somewhat na\u00efve constituent, Jessie Cortez (a whimsically funny Gloria Weinstock) comes to him for help with an imminent foreclosure after ill advisedly taking out a second mortgage so the preacher could renovate her first floor storefront into a church.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Jessie believes the preacher (strongly portrayed by Carl Lumbly), even though he hasn\u2019t paid her back any money in ten months.\u00a0 After her husband (a down on his luck, hard working, elderly accountant played mainly for laughs by Ray Reinhardt) has a heart attack in front of the loan office, Jessie is determined to get Donaldo to intercede with the bank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Rod Gnapp is excellent as Loan Officer, Reed.\u00a0 Derek Fischer, as a senior bank officer, plays his part with a well-tuned false heartiness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">When all six characters come together for a Sunday morning service in the humble storefront church, the outcome is both surprising and satisfying.\u00a0 Even a shabby room can become a community\u2014a sanctuary for respite from what the preacher calls \u201cmindless activity\u201d and \u201corganized greed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">All of the play\u2019s wonder is made possible with Bill English\u2019s remarkable set, Abra Berman\u2019s costumes and David K.H. Elliott\u2019s lighting. The entire production is a delightful Christmas gift from the remarkable San Francisco Playhouse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Storefront Church<\/em> runs November 26, 2013-January 11, 2014. SF Playhouse is located at 450 Post Street (2<sup>nd<\/sup> floor of Kensington Park Hotel, b\/n Powell and Mason), San Francisco. Performances are held Tuesday-Thursday at 7 p.m. and Friday-Saturday at 8 p.m. Matinees are 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday with an added 7 p.m. Sunday performance on December 22.
