Better be wise by the misfortunes of<\/p>\n

In the beginning, my generation heard exactly the same propaganda that your parents fed to you.\u00a0 For example when I was a child I was taught that mother knew best.\u00a0 \u201cLook both ways before you cross the street,\u201d she said.\u00a0 If I didn\u2019t listen, a car hit me.\u00a0 Very effective.\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 I am willing to bet your mom told you the same thing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I was in my teens, this faith that my parents had all the answers began to fade.\u00a0 \u201cStop smoking those disgusting cigarettes,\u201d said my mother. This time I ignored her.\u00a0 What did she know?\u00a0 SHE was addicted to alcohol and you know what that did to her<\/span>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Once I began school, my teachers said, \u201cCheaters don\u2019t prosper.\u201d I knew that was rubbish.\u00a0 If I looked at the guy\u2019s paper next to me, we both passed the exam and who remembered the answer to those ridiculous tests the next week anyway?\u00a0 In those days, if you complained about your teacher, you had to sit outside in the hall.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Those lessons we learned then were pounded into our heads over and over and we believed them.\u00a0 The policeman is your friend.\u00a0 Evil is punished.\u00a0 Pretty is as pretty does.\u00a0 That is where we are coming from.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today, most of us know in our heads that these are ridiculous assumptions, but they guided us when we were young and we cannot let them go.\u00a0 That is why your mother\u2019s advice won\u2019t help your social life.\u00a0 Your mother grew up in a time when a girl\u2019s looks determined her future.\u00a0 If you didn\u2019t look like a magazine centerfold, you were destined to live a barren life alone as a librarian, a secretary or a nun.\u00a0 Catching a man was a fundamental life skill for your mom.\u00a0 Looking gorgeous wasn\u2019t a choice for her.\u00a0 It meant her survival.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

YOU don\u2019t need to worry about silly things like that. \u00a0\u00a0You are free to use your mind.\u00a0 Marriage is an option, not a goal.\u00a0 You can run a marathon and sweat\u2026. You don\u2019t have to wear a bra.\u00a0 Your mother didn\u2019t have that freedom.<\/p>\n

The worst response you can give to your mother\u2019s advice is \u201cAre you out of your mind?\u201d\u00a0 Because the truth is, she isn\u2019t. She is living in her own past, not yours.\u00a0 Getting a guy is not a major goal these days.\u00a0 Living a life is.\u00a0 You<\/span> can have sex and never see the guy again. You have the pill.\u00a0 All she had was a coat hanger.<\/p>\n

We love to give you advice that worked 30 years ago because we want you to avoid the mistakes we made. We love you, remember? \u00a0\u00a0The catch is that now isn\u2019t 30 years ago, is it?\u00a0 \u00a0I mean 30 years ago we ate rich, goopy potatoes dripping in fat and didn\u2019t feel guilty; when we acted funny, they locked us in the attic, and being an altar boy was our first sexual experience.\u00a0 You were a slut if you had sex on the first date. Now you\u2019re a slut if you don\u2019t.\u00a0 Times have changed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Look at the workplace.\u00a0 The one we knew doesn\u2019t exist.\u00a0 Your dad is not going to be able to help you find a job because he doesn\u2019t know about on line applications.\u00a0 He read the want ads.\u00a0 His advice won\u2019t work because the job he had doesn\u2019t exist anymore.\u00a0 You dad believes you need a pay check you can count on because HIS parents told him that is what honorable men had.\u00a0 Girls stayed home, had babies and cooked dinner.\u00a0 My buddy Charlie Gunther told me, \u201cI\u2019d never send my girls to college.\u00a0 It is a waste of money.\u00a0 Why did you bother?\u201d<\/p>\n

See what I mean?<\/p>\n

I can still remember complaining to my mother because my social life was dead.\u00a0 She said, \u201cSign up for a modeling class.\u201d\u00a0 This was back in the fifties and I knew there were better ways to spark up my night life than learning to walk with a book on my head.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My mother was telling me how she got my father back in the early thirties.\u00a0 My father was a workaholic who played golf every day. He left before I woke up and came home after I was in bed.\u00a0 I was certainly NOT going to toddle with a book on my head for THAT kind of relationship.\u00a0 I opted to sample everything out there and keep my relationships brief and interesting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

NOW I am 79 years old, and my goals for romance have changed because I have changed.\u00a0 These days, I look for someone with a fat wallet and a full head of hair.\u00a0 So don\u2019t ask ME for advice on how to find a lover\u2026I would tell you to shop for survivors at funerals.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If you want the right answers to help you solve the challenges you face in life, ask someone your age.\u00a0 They have been where you are and they will tell you what they did to make it all work.\u00a0 If you want a glimpse into the past so you can see how lucky you are to be living in today\u2019s world, ask us, but for heaven\u2019s sake don\u2019t do what we say.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that we\u2019re stupid\u2026just out of date.<\/p>\n
