Drew Prep School, an institution devoted to the development of extraordinary young black men.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">This play is a series of vignettes focusing on Pharus Jonathan Young (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Jelani Alladin<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), a talented singer at the school. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Pharus, a scholarship student, is ambitious and has worked hard to become the leader of the school\u2019s famous <span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">gospel choir, but he\u2019s also not inclined to hide his natural <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">flamboyance and has to decide how to deal with gay slurs from his classmates.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Director Kent Gash has created an ensemble of performers who work as a unit while each actor manages to maintain his individuality. \u00a0The primary conflict is between Pharus and Bobby Marrow (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Dimitri Woods<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), member of a prominent family and nephew of Headmaster Marrow (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Ken Robinson<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), while Pharus\u2019 main defender is his roommate Anthony Justin \u201cAJ\u201d James (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Jaysen Wright<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MTC_ChoirBoy_AlladinWright_HiRes2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MTC_ChoirBoy_AlladinWright_HiRes2-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Filling out the cast are two more students Bobby\u2019s friend Junior Davis (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Rotimi Agbabiaka<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">) and Pharus\u2019 <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">serious<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> friend David <span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">Heard (<strong>Forest Van Dyke<\/strong>).<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">The Headmaster enlists Mr. Pendleton<\/span><strong><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">(<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Charles Shaw Robinson<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), a retired Caucasian faculty member, to help the singers work together and think through their difficulties.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MTC_ChoirBoy_RobinsonAlladin_HiRes3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MTC_ChoirBoy_RobinsonAlladin_HiRes3-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Jelani Alladin<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> succeeds in portraying the different sides of Pharus: a young man who wants to be loved and accepted but who understands the need to follow the rules.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Dimitri Woods<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> successfully shows Bobby\u2019s frustration, at not getting the respect to which he feels entitled, without becoming a villain.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Headmaster Marrow, as portrayed by <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Ken Robinson<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">, sympathetically shows how the Headmaster is occasionally in over his head, and <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Charles Shaw Robinson<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> adds some comic relief as Mr. Pendleton, who emerges gradually from being less shy and becoming more authoritative.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MTC_ChoirBoy_Ensemble_1_Hires8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"width: 291px;height: 202px\" src=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MTC_ChoirBoy_Ensemble_1_Hires8-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">McCraney incorporates acappella gospel songs between the scenes, sung brilliantly by his five young leads, directed by <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Darius Smith<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> and Sound Designer\/Assistant Music Director <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Chris Houston<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">The boys\u2019 sharp prep-school uniforms are designed by <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Callie Floor<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> and Scenic Designer <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Jason Sherwood<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u2019s stately set is circled by portraits of great African-American leaders. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Lighting Designer <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Kurt Landisman<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u2019s effective lighting enhances the mood.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Choir Boy<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> is at the top of my list of shows not to be missed!
