“Peter Pan” is the most age-appropriate musical performed on Mt. Tam in several years.<\/p>\n

For my granddaughter\u2019s bracket, at least.<\/p>\n

Hannah has now reached the ripe old age of 8.<\/p>\n

With minimal prompting, she told me she really liked the dancing, the costumes and the songs.<\/p>\n

But best of all, she said, were the special effects.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was fun watching them fly. I wish I could have done that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I didn\u2019t like Captain Hook,\u201d she added, forgetting to mention that she never<\/em> likes a villain (no matter how droll).<\/p>\n

When I complimented her for her behavior throughout the picnic-show afternoon, she rebuked me for calling her \u201ca young lady\u201d because, \u201clike Peter, I don\u2019t want to grow up \u2014 it\u2019s cool being a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though she generally enjoyed \u201cSound of Music,\u201d the last Mountain Play she\u2019d attended, it didn\u2019t enchant her as much as this particular show did, and I doubt she\u2019ll be nearly as mesmerized with next year\u2019s Romeo and Juliet update, \u201cWest Side Story\u201d either.<\/p>\n

At her age, she has no concept that Nicole Heifer was responsible for the Jerome Robbins-like choreography of \u201cPeter Pan,\u201d Heidi Leigh Hanson for the primary-color costuming, or Michael Schwartz the fast-paced direction.<\/p>\n

But I do.<\/p>\n

So I mentally jotted down that all three deserve high praise.<\/p>\n

God or Mother Nature, too, for making the day perfect at the outdoor Cushing Memorial Amphitheatre in Mount Tamalpais State Park on Highway 1 in Mill Valley.<\/p>\n

Not too hot. Not too cold.<\/p>\n

As the baby bear kept saying, \u201cJust right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although we, as usual, had prepared \u2014 by layering \u2014 for virtually any weather.<\/p>\n

Admittedly, however, I wasn\u2019t prepared to enjoy the musical as much as I did.<\/p>\n

I guess that means that in my final analysis, the show must be age-appropriate for grandparents, too.<\/p>\n
