Novato Theater Company brings Tevye\u2019s Russian village, Anatevka, to life with an outstanding cast, great choreography by <\/span>Kate Kenyon<\/span><\/strong>, and excellent directing by award-winning Director <\/span>Pat Nims<\/span><\/strong> and Musical Director, <\/span>Carl Oser<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The cast includes 24 actors and 5 musicians. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most popular musicals in history, <\/span>Fiddler on the Roof<\/span><\/em><\/strong> was written in 1964 with Book by <\/span>Joseph Stein<\/span><\/strong>, Music by <\/span>Jerry Bock<\/span><\/strong>, and Lyrics by <\/span>Sheldon Harnick<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fiddler on the Roof<\/span><\/em><\/strong> is the story of family, love, change and tradition.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Its defining statement is spoken by the philosophizing milkman Tevye at the end of the first song \u201cTradition\u201d: \u201cWithout our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, who himself had to flee the tumultuous times of early 20<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> century Imperial Russia, <\/span>Fiddler<\/span><\/em> captures the heart of a people seemingly forced to be on the move.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Set in 1905, <\/span>Fiddler<\/span><\/em> brings Aleichem\u2019s tales to life. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Michael Walraven<\/span><\/strong> stars as Tevye the milkman and carries the show with an outstanding performance. He is given able assistance by wife Golde (<\/span>Paula Gianetti<\/span><\/strong>).<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Both must cope with the strong-willed actions of their three older daughters and each of their <\/span>miss-choice<\/span><\/em> for a husband.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Tevye tries to arrange a marriage for his <\/span>first<\/span><\/span> daughter Tzeitel (<\/span>Bouket Fingerhut<\/span><\/strong>) to the wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf (<\/span>Patrick Barr<\/span><\/strong>) which he must undo when Tzeitel professes her love for the poor tailor Motel (<\/span>James Gregory<\/span><\/strong>).<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>When Tevye\u2019s <\/span>second<\/span><\/span> daughter Hodel (<\/span>Gina Madory<\/span><\/strong>), falls in love with the poor student revolutionary Perchik (<\/span>Ben Knoll<\/span><\/strong>), Tevye loses his dream again.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>As each of his daughters depart from their culture\u2019s long-time traditions, with the mild Tzeitel marrying for love to the severe Chava (played by <\/span>Bessie Zolno<\/span><\/strong>) falling in love with a non-Jewish Russian Fyedka (<\/span>Nicholas Moore<\/span><\/strong>), Tevye loses his dream yet again.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Michael Walraven has some wonderful scenes as he talks to G-d about his dilemma. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>From the first sweet notes of \u201cTradition\u201d through the hearty \u201cTo Life To Life LeChaim\u201d to the poignant spirit of \u201cAnatevka,\u201d Musical Director Carl Oser handles these famous songs with pleasing finesse.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Director Pat Nims and Choreographer Kate Kenyon recreate the rough grace and exciting energy with gliding circles and boisterous folk dances. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Amy Dietz<\/span><\/strong> is a capable, bothersome Yente \u2013 the matchmaker \u2013 and Patrick Barr is a reasonably solid Lazar Wolf, but it\u2019s the daughters who challenge and erode Tevye\u2019s treasured traditions and who provide the chief dramatic and musical joys, edging the shtetl\u2019s inhabitants into a new world. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The daughters\u2019 \u201cMatchmaker, Matchmaker\u201d is a delight; \u201cTo Life To Life\u2026\u201d and \u201cWedding Dance\u201d explode with energy, and the swell of \u201cTradition\u201d and \u201cSabbath Prayer\u201d and \u201cSunrise and Sunset\u201d work with unusual charm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fiddler on the Roof <\/span><\/em><\/strong>will run at the Novato Theater Company <\/span><\/em><\/strong>Playhouse from March 27<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> through April 26<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, with Sunday Matinees at 2pm.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>There will be one Thursday show on April 23<\/span>rd<\/span><\/sup> at 8pm.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
