sounds of birds chirping in the wings of <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Ken Rowland\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> lovely outdoor set, which quickly converts to an inner living room and dining room.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">The play begins with the entire cast offering themselves to the audience with what <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Director <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">James Nelson<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> terms as their outstretched hands inviting the audience to come with them on the journey of their story. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">We are about to see <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Brian Friel\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> adaptation of <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Turgenev\u2019s <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">1848 classic <\/span><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">A Month in the Country<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">The setting we have just seen is the Estate of Arkady Islayev in Russia. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/MIC01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-17016\" src=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/MIC01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/MIC01.jpg 700w, https:\/\/forallevents.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/MIC01-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, #000000;font-size: medium\">Shannon Veon Kase<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">) is married to Arkady (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Tom Hudgens<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), a rich land-owner 7-years her senior.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Bored with life, she welcomes the attention of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Michel (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Ben Ortega<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> as her devoted but resentful admirer, without ever letting their friendship ever develop into a love affair. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17017\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">The arrival of the handsome 21-year-old student <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Alexsey (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Zach Stewart<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> as a tutor to her son ends Natalya\u2019s boredom.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">She falls in love with <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Alexsey<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> and so does her ward Vera (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Emily Ludlow<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), the Islayev\u2019s 17-year-old foster daughter.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">To rid herself of her rival, Natalya proposes that Vera should marry a rich old neighbor, but the rivalry remains unresolved.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Michel struggles with his love for Natalya as she wrestles with <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">hers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> for Alexsey, while <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Vera<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Alexsey<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> draw closer.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Misunderstandings arise, and after Michel begins to have his suspicions, both Michel and Alexsey are obliged to leave.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">As other members of the household drift off to their own world, Natalya\u2019s life returns to a state of boredom. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Both servants, Matvey (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Johnny DeBernard<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">) and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Katya (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Jocelyn Roddie<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">),<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> did an excellent job of adding some good physical comedy and romance to the story, as well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Secondary characters include Arkady\u2019s mother Anna (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Kim Bromley<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), her companion <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Lizaveta (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Robyn Wiley<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">, a neighbor Bolshintsov (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Frederick Lein<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), Dr. Shpigelsky (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Wood Lockhart<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">) and a German tutor Herr <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Schaaf (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Mark Shepard<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Michael A. Berg\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> costumes are right on target as is the effective lighting design by <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Frank Sarrubi<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> which added much to the play\u2019s atmosphere.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Director James Nelson was largely successful in finding 12 actors skilled in playing comedy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">According to Director Nelson, <\/span><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">A Month in the Country<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> is a play about the \u201cdestructive and incendiary nature of desire.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">There is a web of romantic pursuit involving every one of the 12 characters, and we see offers, rejections, dismissals, and evasions of love at every turn, providing a <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">fiery<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> contrast to the calm, polite setting of an isolated Russian country estate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">A Month in the Country<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> runs from March 13 through April 12, 2015, with performances on <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Thursdays<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> 7:30 pm on March 12, 19, and 26;
