The play is based on tales by Damon Runyon, who wrote in gangster parlance, effectively mingling violence and kitsch.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">Bill English, the director, has set the play in the late 1930s, using the Great Depression to heighten the characters\u2019 stakes, and English has drawn the characters on the realistic side rather than as caricatures. To master the Runyonesque slang, the players had a dialect coach, Kimberly Mohne Hill.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">I caught up with Melissa WolfKlain, a San Francisco Playhouse veteran, who plays Adelaide in <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">this new<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\"> production. Adelaide is a demanding role. She has to express anger, then dissolve into teary sniffling and sneezing for <\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">Sue Me<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\"> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">Adelaide\u2019s Lament<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">WolfKlain loves Adelaide\u2019s hilarity and finds her fervent desire to settle down with her fiance of 14 years relatable. Adelaide \u201cshows vulnerability, heart, and sass,\u201d the actress remarked.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">Guys and Dolls<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\"> will strut its stuff at San Francisco Playhouse, 450 Post Street through January 13, 2024. Tickets range from $<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\">30<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #1d2228\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\"> to $125.
